Christmas at Old Fort Croghan

The warm glow of luminarias and lanterns will light the grounds at Fort Croghan in Burnet during Christmas at Old Fort Croghan, Saturday, Dec. 14 from 5-8 p.m. The 1800s-era cabins, located on the grounds of the Fort Croghan Museum at 703 Buchan Drive in Burnet, will be adorned with Christmas decorations as they would have in pioneer times. 

This free event allows visitors to experience a frontier-style Christmas as celebrated by the early Burnet County settlers.

During Christmas at Old Fort Croghan, volunteers dressed in period clothing will celebrate and merry-make with music and Christmas carols custom to the time. Visitors are welcome to stay for dinner. Homemade soup and cornbread will be available along with spiced cider, coffee, and water for a $5 donation. 

Purchase a special something for your tree or home: Crocheted Christmas ornaments and blacksmith art will be for sale. There will also be a bake sale for those with a sweet tooth. All sales and donations benefit the museum.

Fort Croghan was established in 1849 in what is now Burnet, Texas. The fort, named after Col. George Croghan, served to protect settlers from threats posed by native people in the area. 

The cabins and structures on the grounds include several homesteads, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith’s shop, and a stagecoach stop. Visitors can walk through the cabins and see how they would have been furnished in the mid- to late 1800s. The items and furniture in the cabins are original to the period. The museum and grounds are under the care of the Burnet Heritage Society.
