Spicewood sings with music for the soul
You don’t have to travel far to enjoy the arts in Burnet County. Spicewood Arts offers several events featuring music and visual and literary arts.
In the Highland Lakes of Burnet County, Spicewood Arts hosts five to six events each year at the beautiful, 250-seat event center at Spicewood Vineyards, 1419 CR 409 in Spicewood. Rock, country, Celtic, jazz, and a tribute to Frank Sinatra were included in this year’s Spicewood Live! concert series. More information is available on the Spicewood Arts website.
“I believe in the arts and its ability to make the community better,” said Mary Ann Jurgens, vice president of publicity on the organization’s board of directors. “If we all put our hearts and minds in it, it creates an even better place to visit and live. I’ve seen it in Spicewood.”
On Friday, April 22, The Band of Heathens, a Southern rock band with a social conscience, performs at the vineyard venue. Tickets are $50 each. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the performance starts at 7 p.m.
“We’re very excited about this show and happy we can present our community with brilliant musicians who not only sing and play with polish, they enjoy pushing creative boundaries,” Jurgens said.
On Friday, May 13, is the annual Toast to Tony with Kris Kimura and special guests. It showcases performers playing the music of the late Tony Campise, a well-known American jazz artist.
For visual and literary arts, you can take an Art Trek. Each jaunt to Austin or San Antonio includes tours of libraries and museums, observing architecture and art, and lunch and a libation at the end of the trip. Here’s the link to find out more.
Finally, put the last weekend in October on your calendar for the Spicewood Arts Festival, a free juried art show and sale. You will feel the creativity with 35-40 vendors displaying a broad range of mediums, including paintings, pottery, wood carvings, metal art, jewelry, and more. Find out more here.
Local bands and choirs perform during the festival. Food and drinks are available in a tree-covered picnic seating.
In addition to providing live music and visual art pursuits, Spicewood Arts offers scholarships to local students who wish to pursue the arts at college. Since its inception, the organization has awarded more than $100,000 to area students, some of whom have returned to play at Spicewood Arts shows.
