Hill Country Community Theatre Spring/Summer Lineup
Finding quality, live theater is easy in Burnet County, which is home to the Hill Country Community Theatre in Cottonwood Shores, just south of Marble Falls near Horseshoe Bay. Performing plays, talent shows, musicals, and tributes for the past 35 years, the theater’s 2020 lineup will thrill audiences of all ages.
Currently running is Ken Ludwig’s “Moon Over Buffalo.” Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:15 p.m. Sundays through March 1. Set in 1953 Buffalo, New York, this slapstick comedy charmed audiences on Broadway when it first appeared in 1995 featuring Carol Burnett’s return to the stage after a 30-year absence.
In April, curtains open on “The Savannah Sipping Society,” a comedy about four Southern women looking for an escape from everyday boredom. The play includes a touch of Texas with Marlafaye, who has moved to Savannah after her husband’s affair. Throw into the mix a life coach, some liquid refreshments, and the struggles of middle age, and you have an evening of laughter and entertainment.
“The Savannah Sipping Society” plays April 23-May 10.
Coming to the summer stage is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” a true Broadway musical throwback set on the Maine coastline where a carnival barker woos a millworker in a romance gone wrong.
“Carousel” has played on Broadway several times, first opening in 1945. Its most recent — and fifth — production closed in 2018. Richard Rodgers called it his favorite musical, lauding Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics as his most meaningful and moving and his own score as his most satisfying. High praise from the duo who wrote “State Fair,” “South Pacific,” “The Sound of Music,” “Oklahoma!,” “The King and I,” and others.
The musical runs July 16-August 16. Then, the theater takes a short break before opening its 2020-21 season in September. That lineup will be announced later this year.
